1987 - 1998 Red Gorge Two Views

Red Gorge Two Views

The tapestry design is based on three drawings juxtaposed with three photographs of Red Gorge, an ancient rock carving site on Adnyamathanha country in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. The work explores different modes of representing country by juxtaposing different conventions used by the traditional owners, rock pecking to create petroglyphs, and the European tradition of watercolour painting of landscape, often used to support the colonizing project. The work also addresses time; the deep time of Aboriginal inhabitation of Australia juxtaposed against the recent time of colonization and the different durations of making paintings and photographs.
